Website Design

Having great content is the number one priority of a website.  Here are a couple of key things to keep in mind:

You are not your audience

We all do it.  We create something and think it's just the greatest thing since little Johnny got rid of his trainer wheels.  However, sometimes we need to step back from things a little and let others tell us what they think of something (yes that is what they really think, not just what they think we want to hear).  Maybe this great looking site just doesn't work!

Try answering these questions with a competitor website:

  • Can I get a good overview of what the site is all about from the homepage?
  • Is the layout of the site a familiar one, with navigation links and other items where I expect to find them?
  • Can I easily navigate the site?
  • Is there an easy to use search facility?
  • Is it easy to contact the website owner?

On the web, if users can't find what they want within the first couple of mouse clicks they are going to go somewhere else.

Keep it simple

Avoid making your clients think – make it simple for them to find what they want.
